Battenburg (Not the cake!)

Wed Mar 19, 2008 11:05 pm

I am looking to create a sticker for members of my unit to put in their car windows. This sticker would have an orange and white checker background - this is where the fun begins. [blink]

Talking to some people this design is for Mountain Rescue Only, others say that it is for Search and Rescue.

I have read some very boring documents this evening and am not really any the wiser! [wacko]

From what I have read there is no mention of this Orange and White 'Battenburg" configuration. There is no Mention of Search and Resce or Mountain Rescue. The nearest that you will find is RAF Search & Rescue. [mellow]

I have read the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 amongst other documents. It appears that if this livery is on your vehicle, as long as it is not reflective you can use it! [dry]

There is a also a long post about this sort of thing here http://www.emergencyequipmentshop.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=408&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=0c62a545b321204ed2b93759d70ef5fa

But more specifically here http://www.policespecials.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15385 and here http://www.policespecials.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9346&st=50

Anyone shed any light on this?

Daryl, having spoken to a few people about the subject this isthe best answer i can find

the orange and white stickers that are seen in the windows of mountain rescue vehicles were brought in a number of years ago, they were brought in to identify ON CALL mountain rescue team members, having seen the parking chaos at callouts you will realise why private cars needed to be identified.
i am also led to believe these are recognised by all police forces that use MRT's and help to stop over diligant traffic wardens or petrol wasting traffic officers dishing out parking tickets.

quite a number of the SARDA dog handlers have signs they can put on their dash board with wording along the lines of " SEARCH AND RESCUE DOG ON CALL".

may be caz can shed some more light on the matter.

We have had the laminated signs before, however these stickers just look much more professional!

So you haven't found any legislation that states MR only can use the White and Orange?

It would imagine there would be very little on private vehicles. The only reflective MRT setups I've seen are those landys that act as ambulances etc.

does ALSAR not have an equivalant sticker, i do agree that the MR one does look professional and does quickly identify MR team member vehicles. knowing how the politics of this world work it may be an idea to design an ALSAR sticker not using orange and white battenburgh, oh the joys of politics. mike

ALSAR don't have one, but LSDogs is our umbrella body - they don't have one either.

Think I might hng on to the orange and white idea until I get a definitive legal answer one way or the other. [wink]

Hi, if you can wait until I am back in work next week I will ask someone about the regulations regarding orange livery on vehicles and about reflective stickers. From memory I think there may be something in the construction & use regulations but not sure. Deborah
