Puppy training

I've started this thread because Lou posted this in response to my puppy photos:

Dont wait for the innoculations. Get her up in your arms and out and about. Sooner the better.

I was planning to wait until two weeks after her first injections (booked for 14th Dec, so basically last few days 2009/first few days 2010) to socialise her with other dogs. What's the general consensus on this? I presume that she can't catch anything from vaccinated dogs? Or can she?

I'm dead keen on socialising her as much as possible with humans and other animals. I want to socialise her in our house as well as in public areas and other people's houses. I need her to understand that she needs to be calm and controlled to have all these exciting things in her life and I'm playing with lots of training ideas in my head inspired by Cesar Millan, Victoria Stilwell, Ed Frawley, Jan Fennell and lots of random books/videos.

As for socialising her she can be carried safely anywhere. Whilst in the company of vaccinated dogs she is more than safe so can mix with them although obviously be aware where this is being done. I would carry her to town, shops etc let her see people, hear noises get used to travelling in the car. All things she can just take in whilst being carried about. People will of course want to fuss her and say hello all GREAT socialising.

Always worth signing up to puppy classes to get good change for her to mix with other dogs and learn social skills. Some run classes for puppies who have just had their first vaccine.

Teach her as much as you can at home whilst she is tiny. Before she fully vaccinated and ready to face the big wide world she will know sit, down, wait, come. Teach her a basic runaway in your garden. There is SO much you can do with a puppy but people tend to wait till they a bit older. They are much easier to teach when young because they thrive on the attention and have minds like sponges that just soak it all up.

There's one bitch and one dog left from her sprocker litter, up near Swindon. I personally wouldn't choose the dog, it's too boisterous and forceful with the other puppies for my mind, but the bitch would be my second choice from the whole litter. She's mostly white with the characteristic springer brown patches over her eyes and ears. She's cocker/springer cross with no papers. She comes from a line of local working dogs, I've seen both parents and a grown pup from the father's previous litter. She's from the mother's first litter, mother is aged six. I don't put much stock in 'breeding' and I chose the breeder based upon the temperament of the family, the environment and the puppies.

With regard to socialising we are planning to take her to every puppy training class we can. I didn't realise that the dangers were mostly at ground level and carrying her around is an acceptable isolation from the health risks. Are there any undesireable social, temperament or pack issues from her getting all that affection while outside her 'den'?

I asked my wife who is a dog bahaviourist and trainer, on the most suitable and current puppy book and she highly recomends the perfect puppy by gwen bailey give it a go !!!

I think if i came home with another puppy i would have a divorce on my hands!!! Especially if it was anything other than a collie!!!

The benefits of getting her out and about and well socialised are the basis to how she will turn out as an older dog so get her out there meeting people and experiencing things.

The issue of innoculations and at what point they are safe to be down on the ground is a complex and detailed one and a minefield where you will get differing advice from differing sources. I am happy to chat with you Tuesday about it and give you my thoughts, experiences etc.

You are so lucky. What a lovely way to spend Christmas with a puppy.

I know how you feel i want a puppy to but 4 dogs is enough in my little house.

You could tell Matt that the doctors overlooked triplets and no, you don't know how come two of them are canine...?
