Dog Whistle

Postby AmyH » Mon Apr 28, 2008 2:20 pm

Anyone know of a good dog whistle that is suitable for a stubborn lab. I never knew there was such a complicated side to this with a wide range of whistles.

Here you go.

I would recommend the ACME ones, I had alot of success with these and my old black lab.

Speaking form experience having failed with my black labrador - a 4x2 piece of hardwood often works! [wink]

I would suggest finding your local gunshop and taking a walk down there with Cole, they will be able to advise you accordingly and try the different types out.

As a rule of thumb, pip a couple of times and see which catches his interest.

By complete coincidence, I bumped into a gamekeeper last night who has 23 working spaniels!
Pete had recently recommended the Acme GunDog whistle to me so out of interest I asked this gamekeeper what he uses; He uses the Acme 211, but said that all the Acme whistles are good and, like Pete says, it's largely personal preference. If, as Pete suggests , you are able to 'try-out' in a shop then even better.

PS I ordered a Acme 211.5 last Fri and am awaiting delivery! Will let you know how the dog likes it in due course! [blush]

Hi AmyH,

I can only give you the advice that I was given years ago on purchasing my first gundog. Buy an ACME, the others look nice, i.e antler etc, but what you have to bear in mind is the ACME one's are freely available and the pitch is the same. Whatever the number on the back of the ACME whistle, the pitch will match each whistle with that number on. The antler one's are all slightly different pitches. If you train your dog with an ACME whistle and you lose it, you just need to go and purchase another, if you do it with an antler one, you may not be able to purchase the same pitch.

Good luck.

Anyone out there use a herding whistle? I don't know how they compare to the gun dog whistles but I remember hearing that the different materials affect the whistle in different weather (brass, aluminum, horn, plastic...). All the herders I know prefer handmade since they are more consistent.
