A courageous canine who helped in the search for Whitley schoolboy Jonathan Marques proved himself top dog at a special ceremony.

Border Collie Guinness and his handlers Daryl Toogood and his wife Niki were awarded the special commendation at the police training centre in Sulhampstead on Monday.

The 10-year-old dog has been commended for his service and dedication in searching for missing people during his seven years with Berkshire Search & Rescue Dogs.

During that time he has lent a helping paw at more than 100 searches, his most recent in Reading being the disappearance of Jonathan.

The 15-year-old, from Bamburgh Close, vanished on his way to Blessed Hugh Faringdon school in Southcote on Tuesday, January 6. He was later found drowned in the Kennet and Avon canal.

The pooch was also first to qualify in Berkshire and has since become the founder of Lowland Search Dog team, which was created in 2001.

Inspector Gavin Wong who presented the award said: “We value voluntary services and organisations.

“We need their help and there’s no doubt that Guinness’s help has saved someone’s life.

“Volunteers put a lot of effort in and this group provide specialist assistance and expertise.”

Guinness is now due for semi-retirement and will instead be trained to help with victim recovery.
