Weather hinders hunt for ex-rescue team member missing in the hills

Rescuers were still hoping last night that a climber missing for more than two days on a Highland mountain range could be found alive.

Peter Grant, 50, a former mountain rescue team member who is experienced on both rock and ice, went out climbing in the Achnashellach area of Wester Ross on Wednesday morning.

His son raised the alarm at 5pm on Thursday when he failed to return home.

A search involving three mountain rescue teams and a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth was launched but bad weather forced it to be called off before midnight on Thursday.

The mountain rescue teams - from RAF Kinloss, Torridon and Kintail - and eight search and rescue dog teams resumed the hunt yesterday, sweeping the south Torridon hills.

Mountain rescuers discover body

A team of mountain rescuers who were looking for a missing ice climber in Wester Ross have found a body. The alarm was raised when Peter Grant, 49, failed to return from a climb on Wednesday in the Achnashellach area.

Northern Constabulary confirmed that at about 1300 GMT on Saturday the remains of a man were discovered near to where Mr Grant went missing.

Police said they were not yet identifying the dead man, whose body was taken to Broadford Hospital.

At one stage during the three day search, 94 rescuers were involved, including teams from Torridon and Kintail, RAF personnel from Leuchars and Kinloss and rescue dogs.

Mr Grant, who was a former member of the Kintail rescue team, was said to be an experienced rock and ice climber with advanced survival skills.

The search had concentrated on three mountains - Fuar Tholl, Sgorr Ruadh and Beinn Laith Mhor.
