An area to discuss general issues concerning Lowand Search Dogs

Hi Jo,
Bags of obiedience is called for. One of the 'Ability Practical Tests' on the LSDogs standards is the ability to stop/recall your dog.
Much to the anoyance of others I test this by setting up a seen runaway or throwing a ball/toy I have wound the dog up with first. The dog is sent after it/them and the dog is commanded to stop/recall. This test shows whether the dog can be called off something they want, very similar to the police GP dog tests. They have to release a dog onto their criminal and then stop the dog before it bites.
With regards to using cadaver dogs in graveyards I'm not sure to be honest. I know that in the US they train on porper fields, but that isn't to say that you couldn't I suppose. Perhaps Mike (the badger head) could shed some light on this as a (new PC term) 'Victim Recovery Dog' handler.
Over to you Mike................
Hope this helps.
Pete.

can body ( cadaver, victim recovery ) dogs search in grave yards, it depends on the type of search you are doing, ie am i looking for blood from a crime scene, the body of a missing person, bags of flesh from a dis membered corpse. all of these i would try. if i was told that i was looking for a moors murder type job where the body had been buried 42 yrs ago l suspect we might struggle. i am on my re licensing course this week so will pose the question tomorrow. mike

Hi Pete
You mentioned about the police calling the dog off before it bite's - how do they do that?
Joe taught me a few whistle drills with her two and there really effective. Oh and the fear of dogs has sub-sided eventually!!!
I'd not realised until another dog jumped up at me to play and I realised that I hadn't been worried up till that point. Unsure whether I was brave or stupid with the thorn in one of the younger dogs paw, but it happened! Thanks for all the imput it has really helped a great deal.
Nice pic on the forum
