I'm conscious of thread theft here, so I'll keep it brief. We really struggled trying to find a rescue that suited both Echo and the girls so we eventually gave up and went looking for puppies. We also failed there until the same friend who pointed us in the direction of Echo's litter also pointed us in the direction of another working springer litter. He's pure springer rather than sprocker, he's currently 4 weeks old, photos are on Facebook, he's cute as hell and primarily being acquired as a companion for Echo. Depending on how things go with Echo (i.e. whether I manage to find misper volunteers regularly) he may well start training in a few months time :)

So, back on topic...

Hi Amz I have just read your post regarding a search dog tracking a missing dog, and yes it is most certainly possable, I was called out to a missing Doberman in Hern Forest, Dorset a few weeks ago,
The Lady got concerned after only 2 out of 3 dogs returned to her when turning back after her walk, she then spent the next 7 hours that night searching for her missing dog, The Lady had to give up for the night due to poor conditions and being exhausted from walking around,
The Lady contacted family and friends from the Doberman rehoming assosiation and she had alot of support over the Saturday and sunday searching the large forest area for the missing dog, A friend of mine who is also a member of the DRA sent me the messages and I was able to make contact with the Lady who was desperate in trying to find her dog, meeting the Lady I now know the dogs where such a great part of this her life she was devistated.
I offered Max and Myself to help search, I had over an hours travelling to meet the lady, so I asked her to find a good artical with the scent of the dog, the Lady chose a part of the dogs favourate pillow and she put it in a small plastic food bag as I requested for Max to take scent, I met the Lady at the last known Id, and I began the search, Max took the scent well and we tracked the dogs walk and where he had got lost for aprroximatly 3/4 of a mile, Max and I located the missing dog collapsed under a tree in thick grass in just under 40 minuets, I contacted the owner and I was able to retrieve the collar for her to ID it and I gave her a plan to where we found the dog so she could make arrangements to bury him. This was an unfortunate end but it does show how amazing dogs can be when searching in an emergancy situation, The forest is used regular by walkers/ dog walkers off roaders and after all of that trail contamination and the apalling weather conditions previous to that evening, Max still managed to sucessfuly track that missing dogs scent seperate from her and her other dogs and the helpers over that weekend. I hope this helps and puts confidence in all training tracking dogs.

Hi Will00dogdog too!

That is an amazing, although sad story!

Well done to you and Max.

Please tell us a bit more about yourselves as in where you train etc.

Very interesting, dogs scent other dogs all the time, hence the liberal sprinkling of scent marking, a bitch in season attracts more interest.

My Daughter lost her Husky in a bnig wooded area, she had been told that dogs always return to the spot where they last saw you.
She put that theory to the test and waited for four hours, just as it was getting dark the husky came bounding down the track.
I have myself put the theory to the test with Trek,( not for the same period of time) and it has always worked for me.

Hi All, thankyou for your reply,s, I Did meet up with Berkshire SARD gang in 2008, but I then started building my house later in the year, and with full time work I had no option but to stop going, I also had just over an hours drive to get to Braknell and so unfortunatly could not continue the meetings.
I did however continue training with Max as and when I could, most of the time on my own, but occasionally using a helper to lay trails and leave articals, After a good few months of trying new variations of my own, eventually the penny dropped and all the training came together. Max has been tracking trails distance exceeding the TDX, which is amazing to watch him work, and even though I have a map of the course It still puts a huge smile on my face when he makes the turn, I have now started training another GSD to track. I am logging all of my training and hopefully will be able to put together a complete tracking dog program, I worked with protection dogs about 8 years ago and I have spent most of life reading HOW TOO books regarding dogs behaviour, training, shutzhund, KC, SARD, and all of the variations and different trainers, and I have taken lots of information from it all. some I agree works some Not.
So that is us thankyou for replying its nice to see the interest, all the best in training its most definatley worth it. Will and Max
