Can anyone help I work for the South East Coast Ambulance Service , I am training a Lakeland x terrier in Search and Recue
for fun would love to join a group but most of the ones near me are not near enough as I work long hours, any way the reasion for talking is she was doing very well going out finding the missing person and coming back alerting to me and taking me back to the missing person but now she is just go to the missing person, then she gos off and does her own thing but not comeing back to me can anyone help I live in Eastbourne East Sussex.

Hi William I had exactly the same issue with my collie
I wasn't making the reward for finding exciting enough
Once I got over the embarrassment of shouting "good girl" in the highest voice possible in the middle of the woods and making it the best thing ever to have happened she was fine.

my advice would be to go back a step to rewarding once she has found and come back and alerted.
Calling her back if necessary

Every one warned me, you will think your dog is progressing really well.
Then one day it will be as if they have forgotten it all

we'll show them, I thought.

She did. It happens to them all

Thanks for that sounds good to me will go back a stage and try again and give more prase and play for longer thanks again.
I would love to join LS dogs Sussex but they are some distants from me and would not be able to make all the training as my early finish is 18 30 so not much good need a team in or a round Eastbourne.

I am exactly in the same situation with my Paddy!!! collie/staffy/sheppy cross,clever sods, they "get it" and you think it's in the bag!!! but then they let you know no it's not what they want to do really, chasing whatever/sniffing/shuffling/peeing/etc... is what they want to do more! so yes take it right back, keep it really short, don't let him/her time to think, keep him/her busy on the task/play and again keep it really short. I made the mistake when I had volunteer friends to Misper that we would do the doggy walk together and then train quickly afterwards. in fact we should have trained 1st and then the reward should have been the walkies with the mates? So I hope I can get him back on track? Keep up posted?

Hi me again be sometime since I posted been working hard, things are looking better with Nala my working Lakeland she is now back on trak, also have now started our own SAR Display Team in Eastbourne, made up of Handlers from the Ambulance Service, in Eastbourne, this means we can all train around Eastbourne at difiant times of the week as we all work shifts.
It is hard work training new dogs but alot of fun to, who nows were we will go from here, we are called as you may have guest Ambulance Dogs named after the SAR Dogs from the first world war and before.
We are hoping to be able to visit other teams around the country, and see how they work and get some tips.
