Glossary of Terms

Alert - This is what a dog does to tell you that a MISPER has been found. This may range from sitting and Barking next to the MISPER or an act that the dog may perform to the handler such as barking, jumping up, tugging clothing, sitting etc.
Ground Scenting - Scent that is found on the ground and is used by Trailing Dogs and Tracking Dogs. This scent maybe that of a human or of damaged vegitation. Some times refered to as a track.
MISPER - Missing Person
Refind - On finding a MISPER the dog is taught to retern to the handler and 'Alert' and then return to the MISPER and continue this cycle until the handler reaches the MISPER.
Weather Factors - Varying weathers factors effect scent movement. For example cold weather with no breeze may cause scent to flow down hill, cold weather causes scent to pool in hollows in the ground, where as hot weather causes scent to climb qyuickly. These factors should be understood by the handler so that the can assist the dog to sove the scent problem that they may be faced with.
