Looking through the forum I see the same problems being experienced in Australia. It will be nice to be able to communicate with other Search Team members from the UK and around the world as we all do have a lot in common.

Through postings, I will try to give you a run down of Search experiences in Western Australia.

I am an avid follower of this forum as a guest and have decided to register and become official (how brave), The forum is a great idea and the common ground that is Search and rescue with "woof bags" is independent of teams. I have a background in maritime Search and Rescue but over the last year I have been involved in and am the SAR Manager for T24 Search and Rescue. We are a Search and Rescue team that specialises in searching hazardous areas and dealing with flood and swiftwater rescue. We work with Air scenting dogs and I have purposely taken a blinkered view at the Standards available in the UK, but I have looked at them all (there are lots eh!). I have also discussed the role of dogs with the relevant authorities for our area's of work and looked at the main concerns. This is not to be unique or elitist but purely to make my mind and that of our team as to what we can and can't do for ourselves. Once we have agreed on our approach we will make our findings public.
I know that to some this seems a little concerning but my background in search and rescue comes way before our current team has evolved and certainly before my experience of search dogs. This doesn't mean we are making it up as we go. We have had plenty of advice from around the country and would like to share our learning with you on this forum as well as our problems.
Our main issues at current lie in that we are not a search dog team, we are a Search and Rescue team that uses dogs. This is because of water searching and hazardous environments like cliff's and steep angle ground so all our handlers and team have a large training commitment and fitness routine.
I hope this goes some way towards explaining our being and our Approach towards the SAR Community. We would welcome any comments ideas or joint training that you may have.

Hi Robert,

In Cheshire our Team is also a Search & Rescue that uses dog's not the other way round.

There are many pro's and con's, we are still very very junior within the SAR Dog world - any questions etc - throw them across
