Search-and-rescue teams combing the Cairngorms for a missing Inverness hillwalker recovered a body from a gully yesterday.

The body had not been formally identified last night but it is believed to be that of 48-year-old Robin Davies, who has been missing since Saturday.

The discovery was made in the Carn Ban Mor area after an extensive three-day search.

Mr Davies, of Cedarwood Crescent, Milton of Leys, Inverness, was reported missing by his daughter on Sunday, 24 hours after leaving his car at Glenfeshie and taking his Yorkshire terrier Tilly for a walk.

An RAF Lossiemouth search-and-rescue helicopter located the body at the bottom of a gully known as Fuaran Diotach, half a mile east of the 3,417ft summit of Carn Ban Mor.

Fuaran Diotach is one of a number of steep-sided gullies that drop towards Loch Eanaich.

Rescuers believe Mr Davies’s terrier, which was found dead close to her master’s body, may have got into difficulty during the walk, and he went to rescue her.

Yesterday’s search, which started at 8am, included 17 members of RAF Kinloss Mountain Rescue Team, 14 members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, six dogs from Search and Rescue Dog Association, a police dog and the RAF search-and-rescue helicopter.

The number of people searching the Cairngorms peaked on Monday, when 70 rescuers scoured the mountains above Glenfeshie.

They visited areas along well-known footpaths, in valleys and areas under cliffs.

Any buildings or bothies were examined before the search was widened.

Paying tribute to the efforts of the search-and-rescue teams, RAF spokesman Michael Mulford said: “The ground and air assets carried out a tremendous job, giving every chance of achieving a happy ending.

“Sadly, on this occasion, it was not to be. We all feel for the man’s family and wish there could have been a different conclusion.”

He added: “Rescuers believe the dog had maybe got into trouble and he went to help, but fell.”

The man’s body was taken off the mountain to a waiting ambulance.

Mr Davies, who worked as a financial adviser for CIS Insurance in Perth, was an experienced walker, but he was not thought to be equipped for a night out in the mountains.

His car, a Toyota MR2, was removed from the Auchlean car park at Glenfeshie on Monday.

A police spokesman said: “Details of the deceased will be issued once formal identification has taken place and all next of kin have been informed.”

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
